Guide Qualifications

All guides working for the Certified Guides Co-op are certified by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) or licensed by the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA) guide.

Choosing a certified guide means choosing a guide who has chosen to pursue excellence. Certification through the AMGA involves years of practice, study, and rigorous examination. A certified guide has subjected his or herself to critical evaluation by the most experienced and skilled guides in the country. Certified guides are committed to providing an outstanding mountain experience, solid teaching skills, and world-class safety.

There are five AMGA certifications that qualify guides to become members of the CGC. Rock Instructor, Rock Guide, Alpine Guide, Ski Mountaineering Guide, and Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) are all approved certifications. An American guide becomes licensed by the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA) by passing all certification exams in Rock, Alpine, and Ski. This achievement is the highest level of credential attainable by a professional mountain guide anywhere in the world.

If the guide received certification through another member association or country, he or she must hold full IFMGA certification in order to be eligible to become a CGC owner/guide.
